If you work in California and serve alcohol, you’ll need an RBS Certificate. Since July 1, 2022, the state requires all bartenders, servers, and managers to complete Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) training and pass an exam through the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). This guide explains what the RBS certificate is, who needs it, and how to earn yours.

What Is an RBS Certificate?

The RBS Certificate proves that you have completed state-approved training and passed the online exam through the ABC. It shows that you understand how to:

  • Check IDs and prevent underage alcohol sales
  • Recognize signs of intoxication
  • Refuse service safely and legally
  • Comply with California alcohol laws and liability rules

You can read more about the state program on the official California ABC RBS page.

Who Needs an RBS Certificate?

According to the California ABC, the following positions must hold a valid certificate:

  • Bartenders
  • Servers and waitstaff who deliver alcoholic drinks
  • Managers who supervise alcohol service
  • Any staff member involved in pouring or serving alcohol for on-premises consumption

The certificate is valid for three years and must be renewed before expiration to remain compliant.

How to Get Certified

Getting your RBS certificate is a simple three-step process:

  1. Register in the California RBS Portal and obtain your Server ID.
  2. Complete training with an approved provider. You can start today with our California RBS Certification Course.
  3. Pass the exam within 30 days of completing training. Once you pass, your RBS Certificate will be issued and recorded in the ABC system.

Why It Matters

California takes alcohol service seriously. The CDC reports that excessive drinking contributes to over 178,000 deaths annually in the U.S. The NHTSA notes that nearly 30% of traffic fatalities involve an alcohol-impaired driver. By earning your RBS certificate, you’re not just meeting a legal requirement — you’re helping prevent overservice and protecting your community.
